6 Missouri Valley 10 Summit League 12 Western Athletic 16 Mid-American 18 Ohio Valley 30 HORIZON LEAGUEIndividual HL Team RPI's 91 Milwaukee 125 NKU 156 Oakland 197 Detroit Mercy 255 Wright State 261 Green Bay 282 IUPUI 325 Cleveland State 347 UIC 348 Youngstown State This time around I included the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) for 2 reasons: 1) The HL was in talks with New Mexico State and Grand Canyon from this league and 2) To further highlight the plight of the Horizon League in comparison to a Conference which had become the laughing stock of all conferences! This is a damn shame! At some point...like next week, we're gonna have to stop saying "it's early" for the RPI. After this weekend, teams will be down to 6-7 games or half of non-con. December 28th will be here before we know it and then...maybe the HL becomes the laughing stock because of how far it's fallen!

Number of Division I games left for Horizon League teams and thusly, the League, to move up in the rankings.
Cleveland State- 7 Detroit Mercy- 7 Green Bay- 6 IUPUI- 6 Milwaukee- 7 NKU- 5 Oakland- 6 UIC- 6 Wright State- 5 Youngstown State- 6
Realistically, the Horizon needs to go 61-0 to undo the inevitable placement in the tier of bottom feeder conference. Realistically, that won't happen. Realistically fans need to forget about the overall HL rank and hope that the 3-4 predicted top teams turn their fortunes around and go on a non-conference tear heading into league play on December 28.

Oakland has seven non-con games left, not six (unless you refuse to count Chicago State as a D1, which I would totally understand).

It had Texas Southern on 11/30 which was BEFORE the Oral Roberts game on 11/27, so I overlooked it since I was starting after the ORU game. They should probably straighten that out.

^^^^^^^ This is so disappointing. A mini "Summit League/Horizon League Challenge". The Summit is sending a clear message that it has indeed passed the Horizon and the past couple seasons were no fluke!

The Summit is sending a clear message that it has indeed passed the Horizon and the past couple seasons were no fluke! They've had a good past few seasons while we have had a rough past few seasons. I'd be surprised if things stay this way for both sides long-term. Also, loosing Valpo definitely hurts us RPI and perception wise. Valpo typically did well out of conference too.

What is going on at UIC? Years ago I thought Detroit had a lot of talent but McCallum under achieved. This UIC group is under achieving much more than McCallum's group.

What is going on at UIC? Years ago I thought Detroit had a lot of talent but McCallum under achieved. This UIC group is under achieving much more than McCallum's group. In my mind, when you have talent and can't win or can't even implement structure or discipline, it comes down to coaching. This is McClain's 3rd season. Tai Odiase is the ONLY holdover from the previous regime. There's only so much, " Stay with the process" talk. At some point, the team has got to deliver! Marcus Ottey, Godwin Boahen, Dominique Matthews and Dikembe Dixson are all 3-star players. Tarkus Ferguson was a 2.7-star recruit (3-star in my book). Of course, transfer K.J. Santos was a 4-star recruit until his injury and was downgraded to a 3-star (still a 4-star in my book!). The point is you have a good deal of talent and entering into year 3 of the "process" much more should be accomplished. Sure talent will get you some wins, but good coaching of that good talent will get you to the next level. Look at NKU. They have a few 3-star players and in only Coach Brannen's second year they go to the Dance! Doesn't matter that Oakland nor Valpo weren't in the semis or finals. The guy can coach and he coaches to the players he has. One of these seasons UIC will get it right...a coach who can recruit talent AND one that can actually coach.

It certainly is frustrating when you have the talent and it just never gels under your coach. I totally agree about John Brannen, he is the reason NKU is good. If we still had Dave Bezold with the same players we would be winning 10 to 15 games and finishing in the back end of the conference. He gets the most out of his guys and now in year 3 you are seeing his style of coaching really come out as the team is made up almost entirely of his players. They play pressure defense and force turnovers, they play aggressive on both sides of the ball but are a good passing team. He does a good job of coaching both sides of the game. He is doing a great job of recruiting in state. Kentucky is certainly not a hotbed of recruiting talent but there are some solid players to be found. Luckily we dont have to compete with UK or Louisville for most of them because they recruit out of the state more. So we are really competing with WKU, EKU, Morehead State and Murray State for the top recruits in the state. The fact that he has landed Carson Williams, Chris Vogt and Trevon Faulkner in consecutive years is pretty impressive. All three were/are highly regarded in state talents that graded out as 3 star recruits. I hope Brannen stays for at least 5 years to help build the foundation for the program, he is a Northern Kentucky guy so hopefully that makes him stay a little longer. The main concern would be if a job in the area opens up. There has been talk around the area that if Chris Mack or Mick Cronin leave for the Louisville job that he would be candidate. UC seems like it would be a big jump but Cronin came from Murray so maybe they would go south of the Ohio River to get another Mid-Major coach. Even after he leaves I will still root for the guy. He is a pros pro, he does all the right things, he seems like he really cares for his players and has put a lot of work into building up our program. He was the guy to get us to our first NCAA tournament and got NKU excitied about something during a time when our school has been struggling financially. I have nothing but love for John Brannen!
