After all the years of the League saying "no" to IUPUI and Fort Wayne, they go ahead and now add one. Seems like a totally devastating back stab! A total lie. If they've actually added IUPUI, then I'm done with the Horizon League and will just focus on UIC and the games/opponents they play on any given date. Man, I hope Tony Paul and his "source" are wrong!

There really is no plus side. They were the lowest of low hanging fruit. LeCrone should get shit canned for this. I agree with both Chuck and BigD. No plus side to the Horizon adding IUPUI. IUPUI itself, however, has pluses, and if they do things right, there's no reason they can't be another Milwaukee, which sucks right now but has.had quite a bit of success over the years. Both are large, branch campuses, with similar-sized enrollments and average undergrad entering credentials. They're both in urban markets, but #3 in that market behind an NBA and a Big East team. They've each got a good facility but it's not right on campus. IUPUI has not history of success, but nor did Milwaukee when they joined. Terrible choice, I'm very disappointed. But this is what we have to work with, and now we have to hope that IUPUI takes advantage of what it has.

I never wanted to turn into the fan that always bashed the Conference my school was a part of. I felt that LeCrone could only do as much as the Cabal allowed him to do. I'm also of the opinion that, if IUPUI has indeed been invited, it's the doing of shortsighted Presidents and Chancellors. There is absolutely no way, SPORTSWISE, these administrators would choose IUPUI over Grand Canyon, RMU, Omaha, or even Fort Wayne...even those without baseball. So it has to be about the cost, geography and the school itself (academic potential, student body Enrollment, central locale). LeCrone was pushing a school that had basketball tradition and baseball. Geography was no longer an issue. He said as much. So I've got to believe that the Board of Directors overruled his possible suggestion or preference. Shortsightedness has killed many a progress! Once this is all done, I will personally fire off an email to my Chancellor to voice my frustration over the decision. I know he won't come out and say he voted for the invite or not (it only took 6 votes), but at least he'll know how I feel.

God I hope my school is the next to leave this joke of a conference. 100% this. Has there ever been a time when half or more than half of a conference left at one time to start a new conference? Cause we should do it. Big DWSU and Commissioner can run it. I'll be the obnoxious hype man.

"We are excited for the opportunity to compete for championships this upcoming school year and it's great that GCU is gaining national recognition." (emphasis added) Let's hope those words were chosen carefully and it's GCU and either New Mexico State or Denver in 10 months.

All the bitching I'm hearing on here sounds similar to the bitching when NKU was added... and the bitching when Oakland was added... and probably the bitching when Valpo was added (I don't know, I wasn't here back then). You know, those three programs that got to put the words "Horizon League champion" somewhere on their resumes this past season.
Seriously, IUPUI won't even be a good team this year, but if the report of them joining is true, does anyone actually think they'll be in last place in the HL? The problem isn't who we add, it's who we're already stuck with.

I respectfully disagree with comparing this to Valpo/Oakland/NKU additions.
Valpo and Oakland were doing well in their previous conference and the HL gave them a bump and both have done very well in the HL but also had previous success. NKU was just transitioning to D1 but had success prior and had several factors showing they could do well at the D1 level.
What does IUPUI bring? A middling team in the Summit league that averaged just over 1,000 fans last season?
This cannot be understated - if this is true it is an absolutely dreadful move. Just terrible! I love UIC and along with Chuck have really been optimistic about the future of the HL as several teams seem to be on the upswing.
But if this is true I HOPE AND PRAY that UIC can put some solid season together and get the hell out fast! A league that has been freefalling in terms of conference RPI and then we go out and do this? Pathetic!

Nobody was bitching when Valpo, Oakland or NKU were added (except maybe Detroit when OU was added) so, don't know where you got that from. Like uicjohn said, they were all winners (NKU at the D2 level). I think a lot of the angst is because of the lack of basketball tradition and no baseball, which the HL said they were looking for...AND THE FACT THAT IT TOOK THEM TWO YEARS TO COME UP WITH THIS TEAM? Do you really think they would've been added if they weren't in Indy? This addition is just inexplicable.

It's not Fort Wayne at least this year. I have it on really good sources its Murray State. IPFW presented with Murray State but was told last night that only MSU would be extended an invite. My source said IPFW will join in 2018-19 likely with IUPUI. I see this guy has stopped posting on both threads. I guess his good source fed him a pack of misinformation! I saw where he apologized on the MVC board about the bad info, but he hasn't done so here...on the board of the fans who're being affected by this! Amazing! It goes to show that you can't really trust any forum or blog poster when dealing with rumors of this nature. Heck, it's even tough for legit newspapers to get stuff like this correct!

Link per mydaytondaileynews.com: Horizon League Extends Invitation To IUPUIThe Horizon League has extended an invitation to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, a league source confirmed to the Dayton Daily News. HL commissioner Jon LeCrone declined to name the school but confirmed the board of directors voted last Friday to extend an invitation to a single member school and that he expects that invitation to be accepted shortly.
“We most likely will be 10 members for this coming year, 17-18,” LeCrone said. “It’s not been finely executed, but that is way more likely than not likely.”
And while IUPUI doesn’t have the basketball clout LeCrone said would be a focus in its plan to not only replace Valpo, but expand to 12 or 14 members — having not had a winning season since 2010-11 while making just once career NCAA tournament appearance in 2003 — the school is an ideal geographic fit.
In addition to sitting 1.5 miles from the league office in downtown Indianapolis, IUPUI would be a natural replacement for Valpo as the travel partner for Illinois-Chicago.
LeCrone said he spoke with league athletic directors Friday to look at scheduling models for both a nine-team and 10-team league. Because IUPUI does not have varsity baseball, a nine-team schedule would be in play for that sport while a 10-team slate would be used in the others.
LeCrone added that if any member schools have already signed nonleague deals to replace the two games lost by Valparaiso’s depature, the league will provide financial assistance to help break those contracts should IUPUI be accepted, as expected, in time for the 2017-18 season.

Ideal for LeCrone. Quite possibly the feather in the cap of an occasionally great, mostly marginal career as HL commish.

The MVC was smart enough to realize that adding UNO would look bad when you have lost a giant like Creighton in that same market.
I guess the HL doesn't care about looking dumb. IUPUI isn't filling the role Butler played in the Indy market, the HL looks more small time than ever in the Indy market.
This is the worst possible scenario. Hey adding YSU didn't work out so let's double down and do it again. Where is the leadership?
IUPUI's new initials should be WTF.

IUPUI participates is every sport the summit offers except baseball. They were 4th in the overall commissioners cup standings despite being #1 in the amount of teams they have.
I can't help but feel the HL "leadership" was impressed by their overall fit with their athletic profile. This of course overlooks no baseball and sucking at men's basketball...you know the two things that actually kind of matter. Look out cross country, swimming and softball fans; there is a new sheriff in town.
Is the p in IUPUI for pathetic?

In sports the cliche addition by substraction is used a lot.
Apparently the Horizon League likes to use a new cliche, subtraction by addition.
Southern Indiana joining looks like a dream compared to IUPUI. IUPUI has had just about 20 years in D1 to accomplish...what exactly? What did they do in that time that makes them a worthy member of the HL?
This better come with an announcement of their rebranding and addition of varsity baseball, that's the only way to justify this.
