I've started collecting non-conference schedules for the upcoming year here: udtitanbasketball.freeforums.net/post/7055/threadMeanwhile, the news today out of Detroit: at 10:00 Coaches Alexander, Kampe, Belein and Izzo will participate in a press conference announcing a double header at the new Little Caesar's Arena (where the HL Tournament will be played the next three years). Oakland will take on Michigan State and Detroit will play Michigan. Tentative date is December 16. Great exposure for the HL.

During one of his introductory interviews, Coach Calhoun made comment about looking forward to playing in Hinkle Fieldhouse next season. I took that to mean YSU will play at Butler. We shall see.

Whoa! Dude coming in like gangbusters! Two Big East teams! The Penguins should knock off DePaul. That would be a nice win.

Story I read also had Calhoun stating no games against lower division teams. That's a welcome change from Slocum's schedules.
I do think part of it is Calhoun having to earn some extra money. His salary is about $60k more than Slocum, pretty sure the assistant coach pool was bumped and YSU now has a Director of Player Personnel and Director of Basketball Operations, positions that did not exist before.
Calhoun has hit the community hard, getting out and talking to groups, trying to drum up interest. In that regard, he is the anti-Slocum.
Whether the on court performance changes remains to be seen, but initial impressions are that he's just what we needed.

He' said gotta do what he's gotta do. That's the same energy Coach McClain exhibited when he took over the Flames. It's starting to pay off. In his year 2 the Flames had a 12 game win improvement. I'm pulling for YSU to be good in '17-'18.

Valpo has Big10 Northwestern @ Rosemont in Chicago (nice future home for the HLT) and Purdue in West Lafayette. No word on a return game but I wouldn't expect it.

The guard play will be new next year. Just a lot of question marks.

NKU's AD was quoted by the student newspaper as saying that it was non negotiable for them that cincinnati would play NKU since we are letting them use our arena this year. Should be an exciting local match up in NKU'S arena.

YSU will play in a tournament in Sioux Falls with South Dakota, Southern Mississippi and Northern Colorado.
Calhoun also mentioned a few days ago YSU is finalizing a contract to play a Big Ten team for around $100k. If true, that would mean four guarantee games for somewhere around $350k - presume he is helping to pay his staff's salaries with those games.

Get some money in the program and give your kids a good experience with the buy games. Then go to a very cool venue to play 3 games against teams that they can win against. I look forward to seeing who they can get to come to YSU and play. If they can avoid playing 3 terrible non D1's at home this will be a good schedule IMO.

Oakland is the first HL school to release its full non-conference schedule. www.goldengrizzlies.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/oakl-m-baskbl-sched.htmlI think this is a very good schedule for OU. 8 home games, and 12 games within 3 hours of campus (11 within 90 minutes). There are chances for big wins (Kansas, Syracuse, MSU on a neutral floor), and the only real RPI killer looks to be Chicago State. OU could flop against this schedule--Chicago State and the non-DIs are the only assured wins--but more likely the Grizzlies will compile a good record against mid-majors that will produce solid records (and hence solid if unspectacular RPI numbers). Texas Southern won 23 games last year and has almost all its core players back. They are a great RPI builder because they are likely to sweep through the SWAC (they were 16-2 in conference a year ago) (remember, the biggest component of RPI is opponent's W-L record). Towson, Fort Wayne, and New Orleans all lose key players from 20-win teams, but all have enough back that they shouldn't be bad, and will likely finish in the top half of their respective conferences. All 4 of those teams could beat OU, but with the home court advantage it's more likely that OU gets a sweep. EMU was a big disappointment a year ago but with James Thompson back they'll win some games. Western finished very strong and should be solid despite some losses. Toledo will also be OK. Oral Roberts may be the other drag on RPI, but it's on the road. And while it's always tough to win road games, OU should win it, and RPI gets a boost from road wins. I don't see OU beating Kansas, probably not MSU, but Syracuse is a reasonable possibility. I know fans don't like to see the non-DI teams there but the alternative is usually to play few home games. I don't begrudge coaches and players and ADs for wanting some wins and some home games. I'd look for the Grizzlies to come out of this somewhere between 12-3 and 9-6. They could do a game or two worse in a worst case scenario, but if everything clicks right could be a game better. My best guess is 11-4.
