I thought you only had 5 "overall" years of eligibility to play ball. So he played one year at Harvard, sat out a year at St. John's and then played two years at St. John's? If that's the case, doesn't he have only one year of eligibility left? Help me out here.

Seems like a good addition, just based on his cool name alone. :-)
Regarding his eligibility, it looks like he had the year at Harvard, sat out one year, and played only one year at St. John's. Looks like he's only burned up two years of eligibility.

This is a big pick up for Oakland. Hooper can't play defense, but he can shoot, and Kampe knows how to use three point shooters. Immediately eligible, two years of eligibility. Their weakest position next year was guard, where they had essentially nada after Kahlil Felder. This gives them a shooting guard to start in the back court, and should improve their inside game as well as teams won't be able to sag on Petros and Felder can kick back out on drives.

Help me out here. he went to harvard for 1 year, transfered to st johns, sat out a year, played last year. he graduated in 3 years & he doesnt have to sit another year via the graduation & he only burned 2 years of eligibility, 1 at harvard & 1 at st johns. year 4 & 5 are going to be at oakland. Seems like a good addition, just based on his cool name alone. :-) my thoughts exactly. This is a big pick up for Oakland. - Max Hooper is getting his undergraduate degree in just three academic years, while simultaneously playing D-1 basketball. And he did this at Harvard and St John's, both rigorous academic environments.
- That someone of that capability would choose to continue his graduate studies at Oakland U.
- That someone who only appeared in two games at as a freshman at Harvard would transfer to St John's (the competition has to be tougher in the Big East than in the Ivy League).
Anyway, it's an interesting pick-up for Oakland and the Horizon League. I'll be curious to see if Kampe can develop him further.

I saw the youtube interview Kampe did about the kid and it appears the position is his, since they are going to be short at that spot. Good pick up indeed.

oaklands psychology department has been raising the bar for the last decade & their masters/phd program is becoming better known. maybe the graduate programs had a little something to do with his choice, as his major is psychology?

Under NCAA transfer rules, immediate eligibility is available only if the student athlete has graduated from the old school, and enrolls in a graduate program in the new school which is not offered by the old school. St. John's offers a graduate program in psychology so Max Hooper must have switched to some other major, which is offered at Oakland but not St. John's.
