Does anybody else think it strange that 3 of our League teams sponsor softball but not baseball? One of the reasons given for one of the baseball teams dropping the sport was the weather and the earlier start of the college baseball season. Well correct me if I'm wrong, but the Softball season starts earlier and the weather still gets pretty chilly in those particular cities.
Cleveland State, Green Bay and Detroit all have softball teams but no baseball. I find this pretty backwards. Hey, if you cut or dropped your baseball teams for financial reasons or Title IX consideration, just say so, we get it. But don't tell us the reason you drop a sport is because of the impracticality of being competitive because of the weather when the corresponding female team of the sport is playing it!
Cleveland State dropped baseball after the 2011 season, saying in part that it would save athletics $450,000 dollars and they didn't have an on campus facility. The one the team used was 25 miles from campus. A couple things here: Hey why didn't CSU drop fencing and wrestling instead of baseball. FENCING?! Since the school supposedly saved $450,000 for the past 3 seasons ('11-'12, '12-'13,'13-'14 for a total of $1,350,000), can't they build a nice little stadium?
Detroit dropped baseball in 2004. They sponsor fencing and lacrosse. I actually can see Lax, but FENCING!
If those 3 teams added baseball,we wouldn't have to worry about the HL's AQ being in jeopardy every time conference expansion and realignment comes around.
