GREENE COUNTY — Some players end their high school basketball careers wondering if they can play at the next level. Xenia’s Cody Phillippi will get the chance to find out if he has the right stuff.
The talented Xenia Buccaneer has signed to play basketball for head coach Gary Waters at Cleveland State University. Phillippi flat out lit people up this season, finishing with an 19.2 scoring average and taking the following honors: Honorable Mention All-Ohio, First Team GWOC South, Second Team All-Southwest Ohio and First Team District 9.
Cleveland State associate head coach Jason Gee grew up in Springfield and played with Xenia assistant coach Shaun Thigpen in college. Gee checked out Phillippi’s game and liked what he saw. Phillippi went to CSU on an academic visit like what he saw and Waters was sold. So now the Buccanner will be a Viking in the fall.
“I am really excited about going there and I was very impressed with the school. I want to study physical therapy and they have a great five-year doctoral program,” Phillippi said. “It kind of sucks having to deal with that lake effect weather, but I loved meeting the guys on the team and coach Waters is great. I really want to thank my parents, girlfriend, coaches, friends, teammates and my entire family. They stood behind me and pushed me when I didn’t think that this was going to happen.”
Phillippi said he gets his tough, never say die attitude from his grandfather and father. Xenia head coach Kent Anderson is used to seeing his now former point guard play lights out basketball.
“He will take on the challenge there and do well,” Anderson said. “This is really an exciting time for Cody and his family and the Xenia athletic program. I’m really proud on him and I haven’t seen that kid ever back down from a challenge. He will do well.”
Phillippi will be a preferred walk-on at CSU which guarantees him a spot on the roster. He will report on July 1. “It’s going to be awesome,” he said. “And they play in the Horizon League which means I will get to come here and play against Wright State.”
2 things: The article kinda ends disappointingly for me in that the young man will be a "preferred walk-on" so, he's guaranteed a spot, but not a schollie?! And is the Horizon League elevated in his eyes so much so that he's excited about going up against Wright State? I'm not sure what to make of that statement.
