This has bothered me for quite some time, and I created an account just to address the situation.
When IUPUI was brought on to the Horizon League a few years back, the reception was... hostile to other Horizon League supporters, to say the least. Yeah, I still know they're called "Ooey-Pooey", and there were other complaints about how they suck and how if they wanted an Indianapolis school, they should've promoted UIndy instead. But the Horizon League wanted a university with decent academics based in the city they were in, and that was the reason they went with Indiana University Indianapolis (with a side of Purdue).
Look... it's almost 5 years since they made it, and in terms of their main sport, men's basketball... they've been a disaster. Their head coach got fired thanks to an OWI (DUI for non-Hoosiers), and their assistant coach, who was a career failure at Prairie View A&M, got promoted & likely will stay as coach for how long he wants to thanks to the hiring freeze. I've attended a few IUPUI games at the Coliseum, and attendance is sparse, but I never want the team to go back to the Jungle. Not only would it be among the 10 smallest venues in Division I, but it was clearly an NAIA building with it's pull-out bleachers. Other venues in the school besides the Natatorium are also lousy, with Carroll Stadium only getting upgrades thanks to the Indy Eleven soccer team (and I'm not exactly thrilled about having to go back to Carroll this season), which plays into the Academics First, Medicine Second, Athletics Sixth philosophy the school has.
Still... I'd think by now the vitriol against IUPUI would have died down. I'm sorry that there is no support for the athletics. I hate that there's no interest in what the athletics do. The Indianapolis Star doesn't cover the Jaguars besides AP articles and they're in the damn city. Local news outlets just show score results without actual highlights. I don't even know if we have radio broadcasts; WNDE supposedly does Jaguars games, but I can't recall if they still do, especially after they dropped the FM broadcast in 2019. To be blunt; IUPUI has no presence in the city, sports-wise, and there is no real effort by the school to encourage the student base or the alumnus to make people care besides the Natatorium.
My point is; I know it's easy to hate IUPUI, but imagine what life is like as someone who tries to support IUPUI.

For some of us OU alums & fans, we left the Summit League for several reasons. One included moving up to a higher rated conference. The consistent 300+ rpi\net is an anchor for the league.
IUPUI basketball is a product of it's environment I guess. Meaning if the school is not interested in improving in that way, why should we be interested in it.
The 2 sponsoring institutions have strong brand recognition & respect, but the concept of 2 schools coming together to make a 3rd is uncommon. The 5 letter acronym is different.
I like how your state rival restructured & rebranded as PFW. But it seems like that may not be a route for IUPUI. UMKC was saying Kansas City at 1 point. Of course there is a U Indy already, so not an option.
I think because of the perception of IUPUI sports, we don't gain anything from those games, which is not fair to the jags. Some will say that you are supposed to beat IUPUI.
Academically its clearly a good school w/ a medical and law school. I think most Horizon league schools are commuter campuses, so it's tough to break through and get students at games consistently sometimes.
I think there have been some bright spots- Ron Hunter, George Hill, Marcus Banks throughout the years, the transfer who was Mr basketball from KY...I think winning can cure just about anything. If you guys can start doing that, it will change perceptions.

I've been mulling this over for awhile. I think a lot of the frustration IUPUI gets is coming from fans watching peers getting promoted to other conferences and not their own Uni, so it feels like the floor is coming up. Other than that, what you named is pretty correct at why people aren't happy with IUPUI in the league, but you can easily change that perception by doing one thing. Win. Prove the haters wrong. I think most people will also carry a pessimistic attitude towards their league until the Horizon League can win games in the NCAA tournament again.

Winning certainly isn't happening right now on the men's side, lol! Our best player this season was a former benchwarmer who is in his seventh year of eligibility, and he can barely muster 12 points a game on average. What particularly irks me is that the women's team is doing their best and have managed a few upsets in their quest to finally make the NCAA tournament via automatic bid (though those COVID forfeits may affect their chances), but nobody cares at IUPUI. I've even reached out to the school to discuss the merits of staying in Division I if there is going to be this state of permanent malaise over the program. While I agree that the methodology behind the University of Hartford going to Division III was absolutely scummy, given their president's motivations and his history of lying, not to mention UC-Riverside also struggling with athletics and dealing with similar governing bodies who are antagonistic towards sports, my complaint is more about the value of athletics if the school doesn't care as opposed to exhibiting open hatred towards athletic endeavors. I don't make out IUPUI as being flush with cash, but they do get healthy streams of revenue, and almost none of it goes towards sports, yet being a public college in a large city that does not make any legit effort at being competitive does make one question if it's even worth the value of being in D-I.

Ron Hunter was an amazing coach for you guys and i thought Jason Gardner was going to be a good recruiter with an average coaching style . Byron Rimm had his great talent and couldn't get anything to work which is going to kill any momentum you might have had. In smaller conferences i think it would have been easier for IUPUI to build momentum after loss coaches but here as of now, it's going to be tougher, but not impossible. I like Matt Crenshaw as your coach, but i think he's probably too green to be a HC. You are looking at probably another year to know for sure.

A couple reasons for the dislike: The awful branding of your University caused by the unifying of two separate universities and the lack of spending for a University as large as IUPUI. They dropped baseball and won't spend any money in upgrading their men's basketball program. Since the Indiana side of the university dominates and basically has the oversight, what's the use for Purdue?

Since the Indiana side of the university dominates and basically has the oversight, what's the use for Purdue? If it were up to me, they would either drop the Purdue degrees or just rebrand as Indiana-Indianapolis or IU Indianapolis, much like the other satellite schools in the Indiana University system. The lack of spending in athletics just enrages me, because how can a university with nearly 30K students be so horrific in sports? If you all get mad at IUPUI dragging the rear, like I said; try observing this fucking program and not pull your hair. We have funding, and the academic side seems to healthy and hale as well as the medical side. I just can't understand why they won't chip in a few extra pennies to the sports programs.

If you subscribe to the "any publicity is better than no publicity" thoery, it's probably better to be 358 than 357 or 356.

Do you go to IUPUI?
Are you sure you can get it into the basket?
If you answer "yes" to at least the first one, then perhaps joining the Jaguars is... something you can consider.
Remember; this team only has six players right now, so this explains the open recruitment.

As bad as the men's team has been, the women's team chugged along, even enduring some sore spots during conference play.
Thankfully, they managed a #1 seed in the tournament and are now Horizon League champs for the first time in program history (well, technically, this is their second, but unfortunately, COVID killed the 2020 season). This means they're finally dancing!
