Kind of quiet around here so i'm going to throw up my random, not very well researched thoughts on the newest news for MCBB.
With winter athletes gaining an extra year of eligibility how will this affect teams next year?
There's a lot of what if's at this point. Students have to weigh starting careers after graduation to coming back to play bball for one more season. Some players may have to weigh entering the NBA portal as well (few for this league.) It also may affect players coming onto teams if the starting positions my not open as quickly.
Immediately helps teams with important Seniors:
Youngstown State - Darius Quisenberry. He almost entered the NBA draft this year, but came back. I doubt Jerrod Calhoun can keep the Springfield native on the roster for another year, but it would be amazing if he does.
Wright State - Loudon Love. One more year for a crazy hairstyle. I feel if he decides to play one more year he'd probably stick with the Raiders because of his relationship with coach Nagy, but I wouldn't blame him for maybe trying to see how he stacks up with competition at a bigger university. I think WSU is a lot better off if they don't keep him for an extra year compared to YSU losing Quisenberry.
Helping new coaches prove their worth through coaching.
UIC, Green Bay - as long as these teams are recruiting players they think they can build upon, i think it will make the new coaches stock go up. Could be bad if the recruits don't work out.
Could go either way:
Cleveland State - a lot of high rated new faces coming in.
Northern Kentucky - Becoming more Horn's team and less of Brannen. If its more of last years look, then it's good. If it's less then it's probably not helpful.
Doesn't really effect/help:
Oakland - changes their roster too regularly, maybe it helps them recruit some 5th year seniors from elsewhere
Detroit - Maybe Antoine Davis uses all 5 years of eligibility, but i highly doubt it, if Detroit has another ho-hum year he should enter the Draft especially if his play starts to stagnate.
IUPUI - may buy Byron Rim another year, but considering it almost fell apart this year, it looks grim.
Milwaukee - this team either improves a lot this year or will be a total dumpster fire. One more year isn't going to change that.
Unsure
PFW & RMU - I'm not sure how these teams stack up with our competition or enough to comment on them since they are relatively new.

What I've read is that the extra year is not going to count against that team's roster. That means UIC can recruit/sign up to 4 new players for '21 even if our 4 seniors decide to return and it won't count against the 13 scholarship limit. Also, with the extra year, the player cannot transfer to another school. With that caveat and if most mid-major players take it, there could be some very good programs come next season. I'm thinking the bulk of the P6 Hoops players that make a difference won't stay the extra year, opting instead for professional opportunities.
On the subject of Coach Rimm:The transfer rule won't help him at all. The reason he's still at IUPUI, is the Indiana University system instituted a hiring freeze. They were already in the search process when the decision was rendered.

They were already in the search process when the decision was rendered. I haven't seen anything in the NCAAs release that says that the player cannot transfer to another school with that extra year. That information was clarified per sandiegouniontribune.com: Extra Year Granted Winter StudentsAn NCAA spokesperson told the Union-Tribune on Wednesday night that “the additional eligibility is only at the current school” but clarified that Thursday morning.
“The eligibility is available at another school,” the spokesperson said in a subsequent email, “but the scholarship will count against team limits. If a student-athlete stays at their current school but has exhausted eligibility, their aid doesn’t count against team limits.”
In other words, if you have 13 basketball players on scholarship and three seniors stay for their extra year, you still get three additional scholarships for 2021-22. If a senior transfers to another school for that extra season, he or she counts against the allotted scholarship limit (which is 13 for men’s basketball).

A school like Detroit benefits a lot--we've got 4 players brought in with one year of eligibility, and now they'll have two. At least three are likely to be starting: Taurean Thompson, a 6-11 F/C from Seton Hall, Bul Kuol, a 6-7 forward from Cal-Baptist, and either Marquell Fraser, a 6-3 guard from Idaho, or Matt Johnson, a 6-4 guard from St. Bonaventure.
Youngstown State is a likely winner, not so much because of Quisenberry (unless he stays 3 more years) but because their other 4 likely starters--Naz Bohannon, Michael Akuchie, Garrett Covington, and either Grayson Kelley or Jamir Thomas-- are all seniors). Now they could have that whole crew back.
As to whether others benefit, it's tough to say. If your recruits are good, and stay, or are guys who need a year or two to develop, but then stay, you do well. But if they're not that good, it's just more players taking up scholarships for an extra year. And if they're too good, they leave anyway before using up 4 years, let alone 5, of eligibility.
