I am not surprised that the HL is waiting on fall sports. I know that the athletes and coaches themselves are impacted by the loss of competition and that isn't fun. However, from an institution perspective this gives the chance to protect and control spread with a subsequent benefit of delaying or eliminating the cost of competition for events that have minimal impact on campus life. Letting each school decide about making up missed games is kind of telling that this can also be a cost savings move.
So far many leagues with higher level football that have announced a plan are in a short delay. Any leagues with no or lower level football are in a longer delay or postponement. That says a lot about what we already know. Sports that move the money needle are trying to be played. Look at the MAC for example they want to play football because they will be in financial trouble if they don't. Their delay for fall sports is currently until football begins. They can't say it is safe to play football but not soccer or cross country...
One thing is for sure, lots of news outlets picked up the Horizon League announcement yesterday. If even half of those outlets gave the Horizon League any coverage during the rest of the year the league would be in better shape.
