University of St. Thomas has accepted an offer to join the Summit League in 2021.
It's an unprecedented move as St. Thomas is currently D3. They've requested a waiver from the NCAA to skip the transition to D2, normally a 12 year process, and go straight to D1. If approved, they will also need to find affiliate conferences for football and hockey.
St. Thomas is a longtime D3 powerhouse with national championships in basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse and other sports. But on May 22, 2019 it was announced that St. Thomas was "involuntarily removed" from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) because they had become too successful.
This could be a good move for the Summit, at least in the long run (St. Thomas won't become full fledged D1 before 2025). St. Thomas is a private Catholic university with an enrollment of 10,000 and an endowment of $500 million. They will join the Minnesota Gophers as one of just two D1 programs in the state of Minnesota, other than a few D1 hockey-only schools.
I know nothing about NCAA waivers for classification changes. But in this case it would seem like the waiver is likely, or else the Summit and St. Thomas have really gone out on a limb with this announcement.
This move further cements the geographic distinction between the Summit and Horizon leagues, with the Summit largely in the Great Plains and the HL in the Midwest.

Sound like Detroit should have pushed for them in the HL

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the HL is where St Thomas ultimately ends up given their urban location and relatively close proximity to the Wisconsin schools. If they show a lot of promise especially in basketball they could be a candidate for the MVC at some point as well (they've been looking for a private school to balance out the possibility of adding Murray State to the conference). That said, the Summit is a better fit for them right now just starting out and geographically. This is a great add by the Summit and much better than Augustana probably would have been. Having St Thomas in the fold and Augustana on deck makes it easier in case Western Illinois defects next to another conference like the OVC where they would fit in very nicely geographically and it might help their football program too because they could probably win more in the OVC instead of running into the Great Dakota Buzzsaw every year. I wonder if they'll eventually push to have their football team added to the MVFC at some point (sounds like they're starting in the Pioneer League where they will probably dominate let's be honest). I wonder if this is a long-term play for possible Summit League football in the future as well.

Green Bay is far enough. I don't see The Tommies in the future of the HL. Nada, Zip, Zilch!

You gotta remember they kicked so much ass in sports, particularly hockey, that the other schools were like "We don't want to play you anymore!", forcing the move.
