Looks like UMKC is heading back to the Summit League further cementing it as a Dakotas-I-29 centric conference. Do you think this causes PFW to step up its efforts to get into the HL. It doesn't exactly help their travel situation at all to have UMKC back so does the HL get serious about its expansion come 2020 or do you think the Mastadons are stuck in the SL?

UMKC back to the Summit improves PFW's situation with the Summit. The Summit is now more stable with 10 teams; UMKC is a respected institution, even if their athletics are sub par; and even the travel improves a little, as the Summit can now do travel partners and KC is a transportation hub with a relatively balmy climate, at least compared to the four Dakota schools. UMKC's move also diminishes the Summit's need to consider Augustana which PFW might have viewed much more negatively than UMKC; because Augustana is a small private school in South Dakota which would just be embarking on 4-year D1 transition.
Having said that, my guess is that PFW would jump to the HL if invited. They would have easier travel, a natural rival in IUPUI and no more winter trips to the Dakotas. PFW is likely to get the invitation if someone leaves the HL or some other attractive candidate appears and the HL wants to expand to 12. But there is little reason to make PFW the 11th member of the Horizon.

I think it's good news for all of the Summit League. UMKC never really belonged in the WAC. And this adds additional leverage to the non Dakota schools. An established D1 school coming back. Also I feel less inclined for us to add PFW at this point.

I agree with points both kevinudm and ougrizz05 have made. I also believe with this move the HL is less likely at this point to invite Fort Wayne, but what do we really know? It also makes it easier in 2020 for the HL/Summit Challenge. It certainly doesn't help the Summit baseball-wise as Kansas City doesn't have baseball. We shall see.

UMKC moving back to the Summit makes sense to me.
This move has no impact on any thoughts I have around PFW being asked to join the Horizon League. If the Horizon League is going to expand PFW is going to be on the candidate list. The Summit leaders seem to think it is only a matter of time until PFW joins a new league.
Right now with the power hoops leagues going to bigger conference schedules I still think the HL needs to expand. Most of the teams play at least 2 non D1 games. While these games don't count against you they don't count for you either in the rankings. So playing these types of games isn't helping. Now the leagues that hand out big checks and with that opportunities for resume building wins are going to make those opportunities more scarce.
The Summit/Horizon Challenge is a start because it gives everyone two game but in my opinion each member team is going to need more games so expanding the league could help.

If we the fans see the common sense need to expand, then I'm sure the Presidents see it as well. What's taking them so long?!

I am for the quality over quantity any day. If each team improves over a period of years, then our collective will also improve. We can compete better when we are playing P5, a group of 5 or other good teams. I'd rather have that then to go to 12 or 14 schools just because. I know conference realignment is a threat to everyone at our level, but I think building from within is also a strong defense.

With a 31 game max schedule getting good games is going to get a lot harder. The big leagues are all starting to play 20 conference games, already play 3 or 4 exempt tournament games, and 1 or 2 conference challenge games. That is 24 to 26 of the 31 games right there. IMO it is going to be hard to improve via scheduling.
To improve each HL member needs to increase spending which is not going to be easy given where fan interest is for some schools.
Getting programs in the league via expansion that can get better and then being able to play those schools is one way for the league to improve.
Also, playing a second conference challenge would help.
The league could also give members money to get in better exempt tournaments. Right now GB has been playing in the buy game brackets instead of playing at a neutral site. The MAC and MVC seem to be using other money or influence to help their members get better tournament games compared to the HL.

So I'm guessing UMKC's addition means a team outside the SL is not longer needed for the challenge with the HL right? Or is that starting this year?

I figured the same. I always thought UMKC would eventually come to their senses and go back home. Nice to see that they have done so. It's the right decision for them to compete with regional schools in a comparable league and save a bundle on travel costs no longer taking their teams out to the West Coast and to Texas Arizona and New Mexico. #MakeTheWACWesternAgain
