So the conference season is at the halfway mark.
Any predictions for the rest of the year? Can anyone catch Valpo?
Who would be your All-Conference teams at this point?
POY is Peters, right? That's easy.
Other first team: Cameron Morse--hard to pass him up at over 22 ppg, but his shooting percentages are not good (40.8% overall, 30.6% from 3). But I guess he makes it. Drew McDonald? Mark Alstork? What about Francisco Santiago? He doesn't seem like a first teamer, but he leads the league in assists, averages 12 points and over 5 rebounds, is 4th in steals and first in A/TO. Rob Edwards? Jaleel Hogan? Jalen Hayes? Tai Odiase? Shane Hammink?
Do your first two teams for all-conference come from those 10? Martez Walker? Steve Davis? Lavone Holland?
All freshman seems easier, though it's a really good crop: Corey Allen Tarkus Ferguson Carson Williams I think those three for sure. Then two from Marcus Ottey, Godwin Boahen, Trevor Anderson, Isaiah Brock, maybe August Haas. Anyone want to make the case for someone else, Nze or someone? You could get two pretty good teams out of this year's freshmen--some years its hard to fill one.
Coach of the Year?
Thoughts? Predictions?

So the conference season is at the halfway mark. Any predictions for the rest of the year? Can anyone catch Valpo? How can you predict anything with the way this conference season is turning out? Oakland was sailing along and then the bottom falls out. Milwaukee is starting to make a bit of noise. Green Bay is still pretty much up and down. Go figure Who would be your All-Conference teams at this point? All-Conference Alec Peters Drew McDonald Jaleel Hogan Rob Edwards Tai Odiase Only doing one team. POY is Peters, right? That's easy. Easy as pie, unless Drew McDonald comes on like gangbusters down the stretch! Corey Allen Tarkus Ferguson Carson Williams Marcus Ottey Trevor Anderson Biased here. Considering the team only won 5 games all of last season, I'm going with Coach Steve McClain of the Flames Yeah, this season has turned out to really expose this league for what's going on. The HL is in a transition. new coaches and systems last season (McClain, Brannen, Darner), there are 4 new sideline bosses this season. The league is still in flux and probably won't be solidified with good consistent teams for another year or two. Look for Oakland, Valparaiso, UIC, NKU, Green Bay and Wright State to be mainstays in the upper half of the league for the foreseeable future. Other than that, my prediction for Motor City Madness is neither of the top two preseason picks will be in the finals. Wouldn't be surprised if it's any combination of UIC, NKU, Wright State and Green Bay in the HL Finals. You heard it here first.

All-Defense: Tai Odiase, UIC (DPOY) Alec Peters, Valpo Kenneth Lowe, GB Justin Mitchell, WSU Tarkus Ferguson, UIC
Coach of Year: John Brannon, NKU

Not bad at all. I think the awards are out this week. If Brannen doesn't win COY, then there's no justice.

Looks like a good list, Commissioner. I think Peters is a lock for POY.

They did lose those players, but Oakland was still expected to finish in the top 2 while NKU was picked to finish 7. They finished tied for third with a 12-win improvement over last season. My vote (if I had one) still goes to Brannen.

It doesn't surprise me that the voters went for Morse on the 1st team. Hard not to, as he was the leading scorer in conference play. He took a lot of shots to get there, though, hitting just 41% overall and 31% from three. Then Alstork made the first team, which is also a tight call--indeed, today I'd probably take him over Hammink. Same top 10 as the voters, though. The voters went with Matthews over Ottey on the all-freshman team, not a big surprise--a close call, and most years both would make it (indeed, in many years Ottey, Matthews, Santos and Boahen would all make the all-frosh team.) I thought Allen would win FOY, but truth be told a real good case could be made for Ferguson, the league's assist leader and probably a better all-around player. Allen, like Morse, had the glitzier top line stats, though, and he's certainly a deserving winner, in the top 15 nationally in 3 point pct. and a guy who can take over a game. All defense is always a crap shoot. I should have put Brock on my team-- I think I left him off just because he's a freshman (although I included Ferguson, so that's really no excuse). What encourages me is the quality of underclassmen in the league, and especially freshmen. You could have filled 3 or even 4 all-freshman teams with guys better than the 4th or 5th member of the usual first team. And 7 of the 10 all-conference players should be back,* if we don't get hit by transfers and other exists like the last two years. For some reason, I think we will keep our stars this year. Hopefully, the league is on its way back. *9 of the top 11 in scoring will return, 7 of top 8 in rebounding, 13 of top 14 in assists, 5 of 6 in three point shooting...
