Link per grandforksherald.com: UND set to leave Big Sky ConferenceUND athletics will soon be reunited with the other Dakota schools. UND has verbally agreed to join the Summit League in the fall of 2018 for most of its athletic programs, the Herald has learned. Summit League commissioner Tom Douple is expected at a press conference Thursday in Grand Forks.
UND also is finalizing a move to the Missouri Valley Football Conference. MVFC presidents will vote on the move Wednesday. It is expected to pass. Once the MVFC move is finalized, UND will sign the contract to join the Summit League and officially leave the Big Sky.

As an aside, The Summit League finished ahead of the Horizon League last season in RPI and although the Horizon League is two notches above where the league finished last season, The SL has moved ahead of the HL this season as well. Could this be a changing of the guard or will the Horizon League regain its status as one of the better mid-major leagues?

Could this be a changing of the guard or will the Horizon League regain its status as one of the better mid-major leagues? I think the Summit League has definitely improved overall. One huge difference is that all 4 of the Dakota schools are the flagship schools of their state. From a resources and perception standpoint, that is significant. The Horizon does not have that. Also consider that each of those 4 are all new to D1. NDSU & SDSU have already experienced success by going to the big dance, among other things. Also, I think the Summit League has some stability now with those 4 anchoring that league. The league has shifted from a transition to D1 league, into a solid midmajority league. We've had transition for several years new across the league with school additions, coaching additions and subtractions, etc. I think we'll be more stable in 2 or 3 years as a league.

Agree with your comments and the timetable for HL stability. I'm just hoping the HL overtakes the Summit League once again even when we are a stable league.
