Early Signings around the League. A very good start to for the Horizon's 2015 classes. Do not underestimate Oakland's signing of Brad Brechting and Valpo's of Derrick Smits. These are mid-major coups. I don't recall a season that the Horizon signed two such highly rated centers. Some other pretty good players were signed yesterday and there are almost certainly more to come this week.
Green Bay signed three on Wednesday:
Joel Okafor, a 5-10 G from Richmond, Indiana. ESPN *** 77. Averaged 8.5 ppg, 6 assists and 2.1 steals as a junior on 22-3 squad. ESPN ranks him the #38 point guard in the country. Had offers from Wright State and Western Michigan, among others.
Antoine Pittman, 6-3 G from Rockford, Illinois. Averaged 16.3 points and 6 rebounds as junior. Offers from Nevada and Northern Illinois, among others.
Julian Torres, a 6-9, 240 lb. C from Bolingbrook, Illinois. Torres is a project, but he's a big, fully developed body, and Green Bay is hoping his skills can develop to match that frame. UIC, Northern Illinois, and Bradley were among his offers.
Valparaiso signed two on Wednesday:
Daniel Relvao, 6-9, 235 lb. PF from Portugal, attends Mt. Mission school in Grundy, Virginia, which is a little coal town in far western Virginia. He had offers from Rhode Island, Montana State and Liberty when he gave Valpo his commitment. He's raw, and may need a redshirt year.
Derrick Smits, 7-0 C from Zionsville, Indiana. ESPN *** 77. Certainly the big Horlzon signing of the day, and likely to be for the season. Son of former NBA Star Rik Smits, chose Valpo over Indiana, Butler, Xavier, Clemson, UTEP and others.
Valpo looks set up front for the next few years.
Oakland signed three Wednesday:
Brad Brechting, 6-10 C, Cedar Springs, Michigan. An excellent signing for OU. Averaged 15.5 points, 9.2 rebounds. Ranked about the 5th-7th best player in Michigan Class of '15 by recruiting services. OU gets the nod over Cleveland State and Central Michigan.
Jaevin Cumberland, 6-2 SG from Wilmington, Ohio. Averaged 21.8 ppg as junior. Had a number of other mid-major offers, the best of which as probably Kent State. He's the type of shooting guard that Kampe loves, and loves to spotlight.
Xavier Hill-Mais, 6-7, 240 lb. PF from Greensboro, NC. Averaged 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks for 27-3 team last year. Best other offer was UNC-Wilmington.
Cleveland State got an inked letter:
Jibri Blount, 6-6 SF from Akron. Averaged 6 points, 5 rebounds as a junior. Other offers were low majors.
Several more signings are anticipated this week.
